10 Year Anniversary of the Sanctuary
August 2014: It’s hard to believe that an entire decade has passed since we landed in Woodstock and began making a dream come true! To celebrate, supporter and animal rescuer Libra Max is matching all gifts in August up to $10k.
Within a few months of acquiring the 23 acre property, co-founders Jenny Brown and Doug Abel built a small coop for an abandoned rooster named Rio, and six hens who had been rescued from a factory farm. Soon afterwards, we welcomed three young steer who’d been rescued as veal calves. Their rescuer, Libra Max, pledged our first $10,000 in seed money to install a small barn and fence in a pasture. Read the full rescue story here.
Within two weeks of the calves’ arrival, Jenny and Doug held their wedding in what is now a field for a flock of rescued sheep. In lieu of gifts, they asked their guests to make donations to the budding sanctuary. The wedding was covered in VegNews Magazine. Before that first winter, they were already breaking ground on what would become the first of several larger barns.
This very hectic pace continued for the next few years, and with the help of friends and supporters like you, we are now home to over 300 formerly abused, abandoned, escaped and discarded farm animals. Here they have names, not numbers. They know only love, comfort and the care they need to grow old and live happily ever after.
While building and running a sanctuary has been a monumental undertaking, opening hearts and minds to the plight of farm animals makes it all worthwhile. Many people leave our gates forever changed by their up close and personal connections with our residents, while also learning about the treatment of animals on farms large and small across the country.
To honor her “boys” and celebrate our 10th year as a sanctuary, Libra Max has pledged a new $10,000 gift — this time as a matching challenge for our supporters. She will match all donations dollar-for-dollar up to $10k until the end of August. Click here to give.
We’ve got some big announcements coming down the pike that will dramatically increase our ability to help even more animals, so stay tuned! We hope you’ll continue to support Woodstock Sanctuary’s vital work by making a donation today.
