Just a few miles from the sanctuary, the Catskill Mountain Railroad offers a 5-mile scenic train ride from Mt. Tremper to Boiceville and back. You can choose to spend the 45-minute ride along the Esopus Creek in a traditional car or get some fresh mountain air in the open car. Watch for bald eagles, hawks, and deer along the ride.
Another fun excursion for the family is a Hudson River Cruise. Aboard the Rip Van Winkle, you will see the historic shoreline of river lighthouses, preservation sites, estates, vineyards and villages. Departing from Kingston in spring, summer and fall, be sure to look at the schedule before making the drive.
On 212 between Woodstock and Saugerties, you’ll find Fiber and Flame, a fun space for kids and adults to play and experiment with an eclectic assortment of materials. Pay a modest studio fee, buy a “blank” and start creating. The possibilities are endless–masks, boxes, picture frames, cards, jewelry–whatever sparks your imagination.
