About the film

“The smell of money”—that’s what Big Pork calls the stench of pig waste in the air in eastern North Carolina, where much of the world’s bacon and barbecue is made. But to Elsie Herring and others who live near the state’s giant pig factories, the revolting odor is a call to battle against generations of injustice.

When a corporate hog farm moves in–uninvited–on land her grandfather had purchased after claiming his freedom from slavery, Elsie Herring decides to fight back. But as her rural community becomes the epicenter of the pork industry’s explosion in America, Elsie’s struggle to save her family’s home and heritage turns into a battle against one of the world’s most powerful companies and its deadly pollution.

Join our Public Educational Tours

Walk around the Sanctuary on a guided tour and meet some of the nearly 400 rescued animals who call Woodstock Sanctuary home, visit our Sanctuary Store, and learn more about our mission!

Please read the following carefully before purchasing your ticket: 

• Tour tickets are very limited. Walk-in space on tours is not guaranteed and we often sell out in advance. Please purchase a ticket for every member of your party ahead of time and include names of each person attending in the space provided on the form.

• We recommend that those with children come to our 10am kid-friendly tour.

• Tickets are non-refundable and cannot be exchanged for a different date. Please arrive at least 10 minutes before your scheduled tour time. Late arrivals will join the tour already in progress. 

• Tours will be held rain or shine, unless weather conditions are dangerous. Please include your cell phone number on the ticketing form so we can contact you regarding weather alerts or tour cancellations.

Help prepare a cozy, clean barn for the pigs!

Join us for a volunteer day in the pig barn! Pigs like to keep their homes clean, so why not help them out with some spring cleaning? We’ll be doing a deep clean of the pig barn, providing fresh bedding, and doing some spot cleaning in their yards. This will be a group effort, so bring a friend! We look forward to making the pigs extra happy this spring with your help.
