Going up the Country: Woo-hoo! "New York State Thruway is closed, man!"

Learning the Lore of Chickens: A sanctuary worker teaching a young visitor about how the chickens are cared for.

My Turkey Boyfriend: This handsome gentleman was my escort as my husband and I were shown around the sanctuary. He remained puffed up for maximum drama, kind of like a macho guy walking around flexing so the girls can see how strong he is. I had never petted a turkey before and was initially afraid he'd peck at me or something, but he was incredibly friendly and affectionate and welcomed being petted. Very soft feathers and a very warm, soft red head!

http://www.flickr.com/photos/11140260@N05/2738945965/in/set-72157606582970053/ You lookin' at me? This fine-looking turkey was apparently hoping I had a pocketful of cracked corn or something...no such luck, sorry to say.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/11140260@N05/2738946059/in/set-72157606582970053/ Portrait of Albie: Albie is such a rock star by now that, when he saw me with the camera, he stood just so in the light and waited for me to snap several photos. He apparently has gotten a new and better prosthetic leg since this photo was taken, and the volunteers no longer need to hunt for his leg all over the place (this one kept falling off.)

Three Big Pigs: Enjoying a nap in the barn...I noticed after taking this photo that a chicken had laid an egg in the corner behind them!

http://www.flickr.com/photos/11140260@N05/2738946227/in/set-72157606582970053/ Happy Pigs: Napping in the barn on a hot afternoon.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/11140260@N05/2738946283/in/set-72157606582970053/ Almost Heaven? The peaceful surroundings of the sanctuary, with Elvis the steer relaxing, lower right. Elvis is NOT a veal calf anymore, thanks to the Woodstock Farm Animal Sanctuary!

Dylan: Beautiful young steer with snaggledy horns. Dylan was rescued from a dairy farm, where he was found stuck to the ground in his own feces. Those days are over, thanks to the sanctuary.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/11140260@N05/2738946569/in/set-72157606582970053/ Albie Investigates: Albie, prosthetic leg neatly out of the way, investigating some item of interest with his friend Olivia. Olivia has been receiving treatments for cancer and may not live too much longer, but when we were there she was clearly enjoying life--ambling around checking things out despite her emaciated looks.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/11140260@N05/2738946697/in/set-72157606582970053/ Albie and the Leg: Albie, seemingly confounded by his new prosthetic leg.

Site of New Rehab Building: I was happy to see, in the most recent newsletter from the sanctuary, that the building has really taken shape since we visited! Donations are needed to complete the facility, though...go here to learn more and donate:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/11140260@N05/2738947005/in/set-72157606582970053/ Goat Whorl: A beautiful little whorl of hair is proudly presented on the top of this young goat's head.

Sheep and Goats: Another of the clean, well-ventilated, barns at the sanctuary.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/11140260@N05/2738947181/in/set-72157606582970053/ Sheep Greeting: Unlike animals I have seen at fairs, farms and zoos, the animals at the Woodstock Farm Animal Sanctuary almost always made eye contact and turned towards their visitors with interest. I think this shows that the natural intelligence, affection, and inquisitiveness of "farm" animals is allowed to come out when they are treated with love and compassion, instead of being exploited and abused.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/11140260@N05/2739785922/in/set-72157606582970053/ Suppertime! Much audible enjoyment was had by these pigs at suppertime. Note the colorful prayer flags that adorn their al fresco dining and lounging area.
