Help Build a Safe Coop for the Ducks

Tuesday, April 25, 2017

Our new location is surrounded by more mountains and trees and water than our previous location, so we’re more exposed to local predators. Weasels have been on the property and they are very dangerous to small animals. The ducks are particularly vulnerable and need your help to stay safe — we need to predator proof and we need to do it now!

Domestic ducks are at a severe disadvantage compared to their wild counterparts. They’ve been bred to grow bigger, unable to fly, and are often white or lighter in color, making them easy targets for predators. Their coops weren’t safe from these ground predators.

Our 40 ducks are in a temporary holding facility while we raise funds for their new coops. Until then, they are safe but away from their home and their pond.

So we need to rebuild the duck coops right away…but that’s no easy task. We’ll be building the coops onto a cement predator-proof pad. Then there’s new roofing, windows, doors, and ramps. And on top of that, we’ll be re-fencing and installing electrical, heating, and cooling systems. Not only will the new coop be much better and safer, but quite a bit larger as well – which means more capacity to save more lives!

A barn of this quality could cost $15,000 – $20,000, but we’re doing as much work as possible with our own talented staff to keep costs down. Even so, the project will still cost $7,500.

We appreciate that the Sanctuary is surrounded by beautiful wilderness, but that means taking extra measures to protect the lives in our charge. Our number one priority is keeping our rescued animals safe and well-cared for.

Please keep the ducks of Woodstock Sanctuary safe by helping us predator proof. They really need your help so we can start building right away.
