ThanksLiving is our most anticipated gala event of the year where we honor our rescued turkeys and celebrate creative innovations in vegan

cuisine. The event includes passed hors d’oeuvres, a multi-course gourmet vegan meal, an open bar with wine and beer, gift bag filled with exclusive vegan products, a silent auction and raffle, and more–all to raise vital funds for the animals and our Sanctuary’s work!

This year marks our 13th annual ThanksLiving celebration gala benefitting our sanctuary in High Falls, New York. We’re thrilled to announce our partnership with Chris Kim & Rebecca Lopez-Howes of Monks Food Company in Brooklyn for our banquet this year! And we’re delighted to welcome back Maresa Volante of Sweet Maresa’s and Confectionery! in Manhattan serving elegant and gorgeous vegan desserts!

We’ll again be awarding our Woodstock Warrior awards honoring  advocates and activists who are making a difference for the animals–this year’s honorees include actor and influential animal activist, Alan Cumming.

Alan Cumming has received over forty awards for his humanitarianism and social activism, three honorary doctorates, both the Great Scot and Icon of Scotland awards from his homeland and was made an OBE (Officer of the British Empire) for his contributions to the arts and LBGT equality by the Queen, whose portrait was taken down when his was unveiled at the Scottish National Portrait Gallery in 2014.

We’re proud to announce Michelle Carerra as a Woodstock Warrior awardee. Michelle Carrera is a Puerto Rican vegan activist. She founded Chilis on Wheels in 2014, an organization that makes veganism accessible to communities in need; and Casa Vegana de la Comunidad, a vegan sustainability house in Puerto Rico that arose after the vegan food relief efforts upon the passing of Hurricane Maria. She was co-founder of Latinos for Animal Protection in 2009  which served animal protection organizations in Latin America, and served as organizer for Vegan Latinos in NYC Meetup which fundraised for Latin American vegan organizations from 2015-2017. She is also a board member for The Microsanctuary Movement. Michelle is a professional translator and lives with her human unschooled child, rescued dog and chicken companions. 

Chris Kim & Rebecca Lopez-Howes – Founders of Monks Food Company

Monks Food Company is the product of decades of eating vegetables conscientiously. Founders Chris Kim and Rebecca Lopez-Howes developed the recipes that form the backbone of the Monks cookbook in their kitchen and reflect the healthy, tasty, and diverse foods eaten in their homes over the past 20 years.

Over the past seven years, Monks Meats journeyed out of their kitchen and into grocery stores, restaurants, and markets across New York City. After an initial foray into retailing through grocery stores, Monks refocused on wholesale food service clients. Since September 2012, Monk’s Smorgasburg stand has grown to a popular destination for uniquely delicious vegan barbecue. In 2016, Monks won “The People’s Choice” award in the Vegan category at the Vendy Awards and the excitement about the brand and most importantly the food continues to grow. Monks is currently working on opening a Bed-Stuy brick and mortar home.

Maresa Volante – Founder and Owner of Sweet Maresa’s and Co-founder of Confectionery

maresaSince 2011, Maresa has been whipping up breathtakingly gorgeous confections and defying all the conventions of vegan baking with her elegant and airy french macarons, decadent éclairs, and elegant wedding cakes.

Her bakery won Hudson Valley Magazine’s Best New Bakery in 2015, and she’s been taking the world of vegan baking to new heights. In 2015, she opened Confectionery! in Manhattan, a joint venture between Sweet Maresa’s and Lagusta’s Luscious serving organic and fair trade vegan sweets. Her baked goods are also on offer at Lagusta’s Luscious and Commissary! in New Paltz, NY.
