On a gorgeous, sunny October 10th, WFAS welcomed over 230 guests and dozens of volunteers from throughout the Northeast to our largest and most anticipated event of the year; the 5th Annual ThanksLiving, where we celebrate turkeys and other farmed animals rather than dine on them!

Under a large tent in one of the many pastures, guests feasted on the gourmet, animal-free cuisine starting with appetizers and ending with delectable desserts almost too pretty to eat. First, of course, the turkeys were feed a multi-course meal, much to the delight of all present.  Then the humans were free to enjoy starters like Black Eyed Pea Cakes and Butternut Squash Chowder with Roasted Corn, followed by a main entree including a Wild Rice Salad with Orange-Coriander Vinaigrette, Coal-Grilled Seitan with Mushroom Gravy and much more!

Bruce Friedrich inspired folks on strategies for successful education and communication. As always, emcee Dan Piraro spurred on the laughter with his bizarre commentary.  Jenny Brown, the sanctuary’s co-founder, energized the audience by sharing all the accomplishments of the sanctuary and all that still needs to be done for those special residents that call WFAS home and for those billions that aren’t so fortunate.

Consider sponsoring a turkey for the holiday season

Throughout the afternoon guests enjoyed animal friendly merchandise for sale including cool new sanctuary t-shirt designs, a full array of vegan friendly raffle prizes, a fabulous silent auction featuring an eclectic blend of items from a vegan coat to a private airplane ride, and an upbeat live auction. The pigs, goats, birds, cows and sheep all relished the love and attention lavished on them from guests. As our most successful fundraiser, all the proceeds from ThanksLiving will allow the sanctuary to completely renovate a barn for our new chickens. We are so thrilled to be surrounded by such enthusiastic supporters and volunteers who allow us to continue the critical work of rescue and education. Please support our amazing collection of donors (list at right and below) and see you at ThanksLiving 6.0!

A super-special above-and-beyond thanks to Eva Orlowski, Loren Brown, David Silver and Lourdes Jovel who together helped form the sticky vegan glue that kept the event from falling apart at the seams!
