Checkers came with eight other chickens in August 2011. They had lived as backyard chickens as part of a university’s “green” initiative, but due to old paint on their barn they came in with incredibly high levels of lead poisoning.

After prolonged treatment, Checkers (and her friends Laverne, Mukti, Shirley, and Penny) all have moved in with our large flock of the “layer” breed of hens.
