Phillie the Hen
Philly was found in a filthy junkyard behind the Halal slaughterhouse just outside of Philadelphia (where Kayli the cow had made her now-famous escape). We believe she escaped from the same market and was looking for food and safety in an adjacent lot.

Clearly terrified of humans, Philly gave Farm Manager Sheila Hyslop and volunteers Mike and Wendy Stura a serious workout as they attempted to catch her for 2-3 hours in the heat. Finally, the masterful chicken-catcher Sheila, was able to corner her and, after some water and apple and banana treats, she settled down in Sheila’s lap and fell asleep for the ride home.

Kayli the cow may have received all the press and cheers for her escape and new-found freedom but little Philly’s life and escape mattered equally as much! We were so happy to have a friendly, curious and docile hen bopping around the sanctuary with some of our other free-roamers.  She quickly put on weight and grew back her missing, scruffy feathers.

Philly made an impact on all of us and showed her inquisitive character while she roamed freely about the sanctuary after her time in quarantine was up.  Philly chose to spend her days in and around the goat and sheep barn, coincidentally where Kayli lives, often exploring beyond the barn throughout the day.  Sadly, one of our caregivers found Philly in Kayli’s field on a Monday morning (just three weeks after coming here). We believe that she was killed by a predator — we’ve never before had one enter the goat and sheep barn and we’re not sure if one did. Philly may have wandered out into Kayli’s field shortly after dawn and become a target.

WFAS prides ourselves on the quality of life, care and safety that our animals receive. We are now on high-alert and are making changes around the sanctuary to better protect the small animals who live here. In the short time she was here,  she enjoyed total freedom to explore and to get to know us and her new home.  Philly’s passing was unexpected and heartbreaking especially since she had just come to know the joy of liberty.
