Jody

In September 2020, Jody and another duck were abandoned on a lake about an hour away from Woodstock Farm Sanctuary. We were notified about it and we were very worried because Pekin Ducks can't fly and are vulnerable to predator attack as well as to humans. Our Executive Director Rachel was asked to help try and find the two ducks, but by the time she got to the lake there was only one duck. He was about 30 yards out in the lake, lying limp in a clump of lake grass. Rachel was trying to figure out how to get out there to see if she was in distress, but he picked up his head after hearing Rachel’s voice call to him and swam over to her. He was very eager to be near a person and happily let Rachel pick him up.

Sadly, there was no sign of Jody's friend and we imagine they were a victim to a predator, and Jody had to witness that. Jody was in fairly good condition when Rachel found him, but he had a large wound on his neck that was probably from a predator as well, like a fox or a raccoon, or even a dog. It's making it hard for him to eat solid food which may be life threatening. He went to a specialty vet to do imaging and he may need surgery to help repair the wound.

We’re so glad Jody is safe here with us. No ducks deserve to get dumped.
