“To be vegan is to not only care about the liberation of animal species, but human as well. Beasts of Burden is a book that deeply educates readers on the intersectionality of animal and disability liberation. This book was my first real understanding of terms like “speciesism” and “ableism,” terms that are used to explain that there is no superior species, and no being should be mistreated because their abilities are different from someone else’s. This book will expand your compassion towards humans and nonhumans of all species.”
A NOTE PRIOR TO WATCHING
These films contain some graphic content that some viewers may find disturbing. Viewer discretion is strongly advised.
“Earthlings is a 2005 American documentary film about humankind’s total dependence on animals for economic purposes. This documentary was the one that sparked change in my everyday life. It’s a truly well-done and compelling visual of how animals are impacted in every aspect of our society, not just with the food we consume but the clothes we wear, the entertainment we watch, and the products we use on a daily basis. This really makes you think of all aspects of animal agriculture.”
“Our Hen House produces a weekly podcast, interviewing people advocating for animal rights in a variety of ways. It’s worth a dive into the archives! But I specifically in this wanted to recommend the Animal Law podcast arm as it’s been so helpful in trying to learn more about specifics of animal law. Mariann Sullivan is the host of it and is always so smart and to the point.”
