Franklin
Franklin was born at a local dairy farm who then gave him to a nearby petting zoo as a baby. He remained the only cow there for eight years, living completely alone in a small yard, on display to the public. After learning about Franklin’s living situation and observing his mobility challenges, we led a public campaign advocating for his release. Franklin fell repeatedly in 2023 and was injured, exacerbating his existing struggles. Many voices joined in, and Franklin was surrendered, but to another local rescue group.
We followed Franklin’s journey at Squirrelwood Sanctuary from afar, so proud of his progress. Franklin was so nervous around the rescued cows, having never grown up with his own kind. This changed when he met his now best friend, Ruthie. She was patient and gentle with him, and the two formed an inseparable bond.
In August 2025, we learned that Squirrelwood was closing and needed to find new homes for some of their rescued animals quickly. Having cared and fought for Franklin for years, we knew we couldn’t say no, and that we could never separate this special duo.
At the time of his arrival at Woodstock Farm Sanctuary in 2025, Franklin was 10 years old. He continues to face challenges with arthritis and chronic hoof issues but receives the very best care. He remains very close to Ruthie, and has begun to bond with their new herd—Mikey, Penny, and Maybelle. Despite all he has been through, he loves to socialize. He will stroll right up to the fence to greet his caregivers and volunteers. We love you, Franklin!
