Woody

In May of 2018, Woody and his best friend Colin were rescued from a large-scale New York dairy farm. Like all dairy calves, Colin and Woody were taken away from their mothers shortly after birth so that the milk meant for them could be used for human consumption. Male calves are considered worthless in the dairy industry, and they are either outright killed or sold for cheap meat. Thankfully, we were able to rescue these two young boys and bring them home, but first they both needed to go to an animal hospital for urgent medical care.

Woody tested positive for salmonella and was treated to overcome this dangerous infection. Once he recovered and both boys arrived at Woodstock Sanctuary, our staff truly stepped up to make sure they received the best care in their new home. Our team provided these fragile babies with round-the-clock care, including frequent bottle feedings.

When Colin and Woody were introduced to the cow pasture for the very first time. It was amazing to see them run around, youthful and excited. They had overcome so much already — neglect, separation from their mothers, and a dangerous infection. Two older cows, Kayli and Maybelle, even took on the role of coparenting these two, lovingly teaching them how to live alongside other cows.

Now fully grown, Colin and Woody remain the best of friends. They can be found causing mischief in the woods together, laying in the sun with friends Max and Judy, or loudly requesting extra snacks. Woody is named after Woody Harrelson, long-time vegan and activist for animal rights and the planet.
