Mothers of Sanctuary

Mother’s Day is just around the corner and we’re so happy to be home to so many incredible rescued moms who are able to live out the rest of their lives safe and loved. Some of them are even living out their days alongside their babies! We thought this would be the perfect opportunity to introduce you to a few of them, so you can learn more about where they came from and how they’re doing now at Woodstock Sanctuary.

Meet the moms

Jo

If there’s a superstar story, it’s definitely Jo’s. This incredible mother was rescued from a small-scale dairy farm in Upstate NY and was forced to birth many babies during her time there. Unfortunately she wasn’t able to interact or bond with her babies, and will never know them. After being rescued, we noticed she would often play caretaker and have a more nurturing personality towards the youngest cows in the herd, often bathing and grooming them. It’s such a special act to witness, and one we’re so thankful she’s able to experience that here at Woodstock.

Tovah

This brave goat’s arrival was most certainly a unique one. Tovah was found in a scary place before rescue, a backyard butcher preparing to being slaughtered. We quickly swooped in and were able to take her into sanctuary, but one thing we didn’t know about her? She was pregnant. It wasn’t long before Tovah gave birth to two baby goats, Raymond and Hallie. It’s been many years later and the entire family is happier than ever, often grazing out and about in their pasture together.

Lita

There’s so many sheep mothers here, but one that we love talking about is sweet Lita! Lita was rescued in 2021 from a small meat farm in New Jersey after giving birth to two babies. Unfortunately the second lamb didn’t make it after birth, but tiny River remained standing alongside his mother. Lita was so shy upon arriving but she quickly warmed up to us after receiving the love and care she needed. Little baby River took no time at all to start hopping around us in joy. The two have grown so much since their rescue, and are often found napping together or going on adventures around the sanctuary with the rest of the sheep herd.
