Peppermint
Peppermint was rescued from a live-kill market on Long Island in November of 2022, along with Drew the turkey, who was destined to be slaughtered for the Thanksgiving holiday. The group that handled their initial rescue reached out to Woodstock Farm Sanctuary and we quickly agreed to provide these sweet, frightened birds a forever home.
When Peppermint the Leghorn chicken arrived, she was emaciated with overgrown nails. She had also been debeaked, a cruel practice of removing the tip of a bird’s beak with no anesthetic, which can lead to many health issues. Due to her short beak, we began to feed her special soft meals so that she would not struggle with pain or discomfort as she ate. This poor young chicken was in rough shape, with several noticeable bruises and lice. She was, understandably, quite shy, but as our care team treated her with love, and she regained her health, she became more active and curious.
Now recovered, Peppermint is thriving. She can still be shy around humans at first, but she loves her new flock, including friends Buffy, Celeste, and Shirley— a turkey who prefers the company of chickens! Her favorite snacks are blueberries and cucumbers, and she is a big fan of basking in the sun on a warm day. We are so thankful we were able to take in this sweet girl and that she finally has nutritious food, loving care, and the ample yard and shelter she deserves.
