Frankie and Alberta

Frankie was rescued in October 2022, along with Millie the duck, from a neglectful hoarding situation. The two were kept in small cages, with very little room to move. They were only provided the occasional food and water. A concerned neighbor reported the cruel and unsanitary conditions and was able to convince this person to surrender Frankie and Millie. When Frankie arrived at Woodstock Farm Sanctuary, he was noticeably thin with overgrown nails.

Through the efforts of his amazing caregivers, he has been able to gain some healthy weight, as well as some confidence. Frankie is easily recognizable with his small, fluffy frame and beautiful black and white markings. Once Frankie was settled into his new home, we set out to find him a rabbit companion. Reenies Rabbit Rescue offered to help Frankie form a bond with another rabbit in need of sanctuary, and they introduced him to Alberta.

In December of 2021, sixteen rabbits were discovered living in horrible conditions at a backyard butcher operation. Sadly, two of these rabbits passed away, but the remaining fourteen were rescued, including Alberta. These rabbits lived in small, stacked cages inside a filthy shed. Their shelters were never cleaned, and they were fed old bagels and ice rather than any nutritious food. All the rabbits were severely underweight, frightened of humans, and were still very young, as they are killed young for meat. Although the rabbits received amazing medical care at the rescue, Alberta appeared depressed. The rescue staff thought of her right away when we reached out, as she longed for companionship and a location where she could have plenty of outdoor space to explore.

Frankie and Alberta successfully bonded, often a challenge for newly introduced rabbits. They have now moved into Woodstock Farm Sanctuary’s Bunny Barn as a bonded pair. It is so exciting to watch these two run through the grass together and cuddle inside the barn when it gets cold. Frankie has become quite bold and loves attention from his caregivers. Sweet Alberta, a Flemish Giant rabbit, is shy and gentle, despite her large size. We cannot wait to watch these two thrive and grow together with the promise of lifelong sanctuary.
