SAVE THE BIRDS

Woodstock Sanctuary is home to over 230 birds

in the beautiful Hudson Valley along with hundreds of other rescued farmed animals. All of the birds who call our live at our sanctuary were rescued from neglect, abuse, and slaughter. Our caregiving team works around the clock to provide specialized care to help them recover and thrive. But we have more challenges than ever and need help to provide the best care possible for our birds and to keep rescuing.

Many of these projects are urgent but on hold until we can make sure we have enough support — we are 100% donor funded and rely on our community for everything that we do. Can you help?

Why Birds?

In order to keep the birds in our care safe and to keep rescuing birds in 2023 and beyond, we need to do the following:

  • The global spread of a deadly avian influenza requires us to improve our housing and add aviaries to the most vulnerable areas

  • Due to the increased human development in rural areas, there are increased predator threats to our rescued flocks, and we need to add hundreds of feet of fencing protection

  • Climate change has increased the instances of severe and extreme weather in our area, and we need to insulate coops and barns not built for the severe highs and lows

  • The popularity of backyard chicken and duck flocks has led to more birds being abandoned and neglected and an increased need for sanctuary. We need to convert a current building to a Medical Cabin for new rescues

  • Improve our current bird areas for wellbeing including a new duck pond, native bush and fruit tree planting, and renovations of older coops and barns

How can I help?

There are so many ways that you can help our rescued birds! From making a gift today to help with medical care, housing costs, and rescue costs, sponsoring a native fruit tree to be planted in one of our bird yards, or sponsoring an entire flock and naming their coop. Any and all support for our birds is greatly appreciated, and every gift really does matter. Click the option you’re most interested in below to help!

*NOTE: Gifts of $500 or more will be honored with a stone featuring an inscription of your choice to be placed around our new duck pond.

Meet the birds of Woodstock

We’ve saved thousands of birds over the years, and are currently home to 230 birds. Here are some of the birds that are currently in our care!

CLYDE

In 2015, Woodstock Sanctuary’s most bold, most personable rooster arrived. Clyde was found in rough shape wandering on the streets of NYC after escaping a live-kill market. Today Clyde loves dancing around humans, begging for them to hold him and cuddle him.

LESLEY

Lesley was rescued in November of 2022 from a small slaughterhouse in New York City. She now lives with Monisha and Drew who were also rescued that month. Her beak was debeaked prior to rescue, which means she requires extra medical care but she’s a happy, joyful turkey with a distinctive chirp.

YULIE

Yulie was rescued in December of 2019 from a couple who could no longer afford to care for her and threatened to take her to be eaten. Now she is safe and happy with her best friends, and is one of the most friendly hens! She loves greeting visitors and eating blueberry snacks.

SHIRLEY

Shirley was kept in a tiny backyard pen. After getting the immediate care she needed, Shirley has been doing great ever since! She is not only beautiful, but she is talkative! You hear Shirley before you see her, and her sweet voice and bold presence are hard to forget.

Kiwi

Kiwi is one of our most famous rescued birds and was rescued in 2020 after being attacked by a predator. She uses a custom wheelchair to get around and spends her days with the rest of our disabled duck flock. Her favorite activity is her supervised pool physical therapy with her friends Charlotte and Kanga.

MR.SMITH

Mr. Smith came to us from another sanctuary that was closing down in 2022. He’s a very social goose who lives with a duck flock and prefers the company of ducks over geese. He’s loud but friendly, and wants all the human and duck attention. He loves swimming in the pond and sitting on human laps.
