Nora

In January 2022, Woodstock Sanctuary, along with two other animal rescues, learned of a terrible local neglect case. The owners of this property had goats and sheep but were only feeding them once a week as they lived in New York City. They then decided to sell the house and wanted the animals gone. A prospective buyer who visited the property coordinated this time-sensitive rescue. Sadly, the homeowners had already sent some of the animals to slaughter, but we worked with two other sanctuaries to help save all the lives we could.

When we arrived to help, we saw right away that the sheep’s wool was very matted and knotted. Their water and food bowls were dirty, and they had barely any shelter to protect them from the harsh winter temperatures. These poor animals were forgotten and viewed as trash by the owners. Thankfully, all the remaining animals were placed in sanctuaries, including Nora, who found a home with us here at Woodstock Sanctuary. We had intended only to help with medical triage and transportation with this rescue, but we knew we couldn’t say no to her.

Even though it was the middle of winter, we gave her a haircut because her wool was so matted and heavy. Nora required so much care to overcome this neglect, but she was visibly relieved once all her excess wool was removed. Nora is still quite shy around humans (and we don’t blame her!), but she loves her fellow sheep. She really enjoys the company of Oracle and Nicole, and she has such a sweet, inquisitive face.
