A Big Field Trip for a Little Goat

Big update for Remy the goat!

If you don’t already know, we rescued sweet little Remy when he was just a few months old from a fellow sanctuary and were shocked to see that his front legs were severely bent, so much so that it looked uncomfortable for Remy to move around. We quickly took him in and made sure to get all the necessary tests done medically to make the best choice for him, so that he can have a happy and long life. It was then that we realized that his two front legs needed to be partially amputated so that we can move forward with making him more mobile.

Amputation is quite the process and the healing takes a long time. For the past several months, Remy the goat has been healing in his room in our medical barn and receiving all the love from our amazing caregiving staff. What does healing look like for Remy, you ask? It requires lots of rest, daily rewrapping of his legs (our team has chosen some pretty stylish wrapping for him), making sure he’s getting all his required nutrients and hydration, and a bit of physical therapy in the form of joining caregiving meetings outside in the grass (He has a lot of great ideas)!

Remy’s condition has improved tremendously, and we’re happy to say that he is even able to walk on his front legs, despite them being shorter! However, we’re currently in the process of finding alternatives to make this even more comfortable for him, one of them being prosthetics that will allow him to stand more upright and have better posture which will greatly improve his mobility and freedom (Click here to see his fitting reel on Instagram!). We’ve already had one fitting and are waiting for our final prosthetics from him! In the meantime, we realized that Remy is quickly outgrowing his current wheelchair and it’s become quite wobbly, so he desperately needs a new one. Queue field trip!

Early last week, our Shelter Director Hervé went on a road trip with Remy to get fitted for his very first custom wheelchair at Eddie's wheel in Shelburne Falls, Massachusetts. We made sure to make the vehicle nice and cozy for Remy, packing it with lots of blankets, some hay for the ride, and a pre-trip snack of cucumbers. This little goat was READY TO GO!

The trip went really well and we even got a picture of Remy in front of the doctor’s office as a travel keepsake (above), but we will be returning once again within the next couple of weeks for the final fitting of his new wheelchair to make sure it’s perfect. So, stay tuned for the adventures of Remy and Hervé!
