New Rescue: Two Baby Turkeys

Hi friends,

Today we’re thankful for many reasons, but the most important of them all? We rescued two baby turkeys this week that were just days from being consumed for Thanksgiving. Like all turkeys bred for today, they really are just babies, sent to be slaughtered at around 5-6 months old when their natural lifespan allows them to live upwards of 10 years.

When the babies arrived, we quickly noticed that they were already de-beaked and de-toed, both very painful but very common procedures in which the tip of bird’s beaks and the first joint of their toes are cut without anesthetic. This can create long-term health issues like not being able to eat properly or having mobility issues due to bumble, a case in which the feet get cracks on them that can be prone to infection. All of this is usually done just days after they’re born.

Right now, our biggest priority is making sure these precious babies are well cared for by performing necessary medical tests, administering medication, and making sure they’re warm and comfortable inside with a fresh meal being that they’re quite fragile and vulnerable still and can’t stay out in the cold for too long.

Like all beings, these turkeys deserve kindness, compassion, and the utmost care. We’re happy they’re safe with us, and we can’t wait to learn more about their personalities as they bloom in sanctuary.
