Sylvia

In September of 2023, we learned of a small Yorkshire piglet who had fallen off a transport truck. At just five weeks old, Sylvia should have been bonding with her mother and siblings. Instead, she was on her way to a feed yard where she would have gained weight for a few months before slaughter. This special little piglet somehow survived a fall from the transport truck and a kind person reached out to us after initially rescuing her.

Just days later, we were informed of another piglet who had been found alone on an unseasonably warm day due to the same circumstances. We knew we needed to rescue this second piglet, who not only deserved a chance at a full, happy life, but would become a perfect companion for little Sylvia. We named this second piglet Marge.

Shelter Director, Hervé, greeting Sylvia.

Sylvia and Marge have really settled into sanctuary life. We are amazed by their joyful, trusting nature. They love their cozy beds and zooming around in the hay. When Sylvia arrived, she was so tiny and would climb onto caregivers’ laps for naps. Now Sylvia is too big to be climbing onto laps, but she and best friend Marge spend their time rooting through the grass and dirt in their pasture. They made a big move together in 2024 and now live alongside a gentle older pig named Bunny. It is amazing to see this girl grow and thrive in an environment where she will never be seen as a commodity but as the unique and precious individual she is.
