Shakespeare Flock
In the summer of 2026, our friends at Lancaster Farm Sanctuary put out an urgent message: they had managed to save over 60 hens from an egg farm that was shutting down in their area and needed placement. These hens had been hours away from being sent to slaughter and were the only ones to make it out thanks to an incredible soul who put as many hens into her truck as she could. Several amazing sanctuaries stepped up to offer groups of these hens homes, and we’re so glad we could also take in a few of these survivors. These chickens were crammed together with very little living space, no access to grass or sunshine, and were severely mistreated. They arrived at the Sanctuary quite thin and missing many feathers.
These sweet friends are settling in during their quarantine period, finally eating nutritious food, and receiving veterinary care for the first time. They will begin to regrow their feathers as their stress lessens and their bodies recover. We have named these brave hens after characters from Shakespeare comedies: Rosalind, Hero, Portia, Titania, and Viola. We look forward to introducing this friendly little group to one of our rescued flocks. Stay tuned for updates!
